MONTREAL - Sakara vs. Cote
Alessio (Legionarius) Sakara was disqualified for a series of illegal punches against Patrick (The Predator) Cote. After getting rocked by a stiff elbow, the Quebec City middleweight shot in for a takedown. Sakara then unloaded with shots to the back of the head, causing referee Dan Miragliotta to stop the bout. Sakara apologized, saying he was "caught up in the moment."
Diabate vs. Griggs
Cyrille (Snake) Diabate made quick work of Chad (The Grave Digger) Griggs, submitting the Strikeforce veteran with a rear-naked choke. Griggs charged forward like a man possessed, but was quickly dropped by a straight-left. The French light-heavyweight bloodied Griggs with knees before slipping in a rear-naked choke.
Makdessi vs. Stout
John (The Bull) Makdessi utilized sharp counter-strikes to win an entertaining unanimous decision over fellow Canadian Sam (Hands of Stone) Stout. The Tristar Gym lightweight frustrated Stout with his timing and range, peppering the London, Ont., native with jabs and hooks, while avoiding power shots.
Carvalho vs. Damm
Antonio (Pato) Carvalho battered Rodrigo Damm's lead leg to capture a split-decision victory. The Oshawa featherweight managed to avoid Damm's punches and unload with low kicks throughout the first two rounds. Damm picked it up in the third, but failed to put Carvalho away.
Ridle vs. Maguire
Matt (Deep Waters) Riddle won a close unanimous decision over John (The One) Maguire. Much of the bout saw the two go toe-to-toe, with Maguire landing punches while avoiding many of Riddle's counters. But the TUF 7 cast member pushed the pace and found a home for heavy kicks to sway the judges.
Menjivar vs. Gashimov
Ivan (Pride of El Salvador) Menjivar earned a slick submission victory over Azamat (Tough Guy) Gashimov. Gashimov took the Tristar Gym bantamweight to the mat early, but found little success with his ground-and-pound. Menjivar then locked up the Russian's arm and swept his leg into a belly-down armbar.
Elkins vs. Siler
Darren (The Damage) Elkins dominated Steven (Super) Siler en route to a unanimous-decision victory in the opening bout. Siler showed a ton of heart, fighting off multiple choke attempts and eating stiff ground-and-pound, but just couldn't mount any significant offence. Elkins is now 4-0 at featherweight.
Middleweight scrap scratched
A scheduled middleweight clash between Nick (The Promise) Ring and Constantinos Philippou was scratched mere hours before UFC 154.
Ring and Philippou were set to meet on the main card in Montreal Saturday, but Ring was pulled from the event after falling ill. UFC officials confirmed the Calgary fighter was not cleared to compete.
Philippou received his show purse.
As a result, Toronto's Mark Bocek and Brazilian Rafael dos Anjos were bumped up from the preliminary card.
Ring's last outing saw him pick up a controversial unanimous decision over Court McGee at UFC 149 in Calgary July 21. Philippou is currently riding a four-fight win streak, with victories over Jorge Rivera, Jared Hamman, McGee and Riki Fukuda.
