CALGARY - Calgary UFC fans have a major announcement coming their way next week.

And president Dana White will be on hand to make it.

White and UFC director of Canadian operations Tom Wright will be on hand for a press conference Wednesday at noon at Flames Central,

The Sun previously reported a UFC event will be announced for Calgary and when asked, UFC spokesman Steve Keogh did say fans won’t be disappointed.

“I’d definitely say Calgary’s going to be happy come next week, for sure,” he said. “We’re extremely happy to be coming.

“We see all the comments, whether it’s through social media or (elsewhere), from Alberta and Calgary in particular and it’s such a hotbed ... there’s a lot of different smaller promotions, there’s a lot of fighters coming out of there.”

Local UFC middleweight fighter Nick Ring is equally tight-lipped.

“You can’t trust a fighter with information, y’know?” he said.

“I’m very excited to hear what they have to say — I never thought that I would see the day that Dana White would be strolling through here, ‘making an announcement.’”

UFC will also host a workout session open to the public Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at BDB Martial Arts in the city’s northeast.

It will feature Ring, fellow UFC middleweight Jason MacDonald, and UFC lightweight Mitch Clarke.

Stampeders Eric Fraser and Corey Mace will also be in attendance.

“They’re both UFC fans and we’re going to teach them the ropes a little bit,” said Keogh.

“Obviously nothing too drastic, just something fun for fans to see.”

Ring said the open workout would be more another teaser for the fans than the real deal — just something to get them hyped.

“It’s more just giving people a taste of what you do — obviously training for a fight is a lot more complicated ... (this is) going to be more of the flashy techniques,” he said.
