UFC 131 Notebook

VANCOUVER - UFC president Dana White has had it with three round headliners. The boss of the biggest fight club in the world says — following the scheduled fights such as UFC 133’s with Rashad Evans taking on Phil Davis and UFC on Versus 5’s Dan Hardy against Chris Lytle — all main event fights will be five rounds, regardless of whether there’s a belt on the line or not. • White also said UFC 135 will take place in Denver and is expected to feature a title fight between light-heavyweight champ Jon (Bones) Jones and Quinton (Rampage) Jackson. • A new weight class may be on its way. White said he is seriously looking at introducing a 125 lbs. flyweight division in the near future. • The winner of the Junior dos Santos/Shane Carwin fight at UFC 131’s main event should face heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez “within four-to-five” months, White said. • Lisa Hamada’s love of the UFC is permanent. The Hawaiian is attending her 13th event and has a pair of UFC gloves tattooed on her back with the numbers of every event she’s attended. Now that’s devotion. • Winnipeg’s Krzysztof Soszynski has re-ignited his love for hockey. Soszynski, who takes on Mike Massenzio here at Saturday’s UFC 131. “I worked at the Winnipeg Arena selling popcorn and pop from the time I was 12,” says the Polish transplant. “I was there for the whole Essensa era, Teemu Selanne scoring his 76th goal and the last game.” “When hockey left Winnipeg I lost that passion to follow it too closely to be honest.” Soszynski says he is pumped to have an NHL team back and plans to attend when he can. |
