By JOSE RODRIGUEZ, QMI Agency
The UFC is returning to the cradle of mixed-martial arts this summer. This week, UFC president Dana White announced the fight club will return to Brazil for the first time in 13 years with an event at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena on Aug. 27. Billed as a “major” pay-per-view event, the card is expected to include many Brazilian fighters. Along with the mayor of Rio, UFC Hall of Famer Royce Gracie and fighters Anderson Silva, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Jose Aldo and Vitor Belfort were on hand for the announcement.
Numbers game for T.O.
The date’s the same, but the number’s changed. UFC officials say Toronto will host UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre on April 30. The fight club originally announced the event as UFC 131. No fight card has officially been announced, but a heavyweight title bout between champ Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos as well as a welterweight belt fight between champ Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields have been rumoured.
Herschel back in cage
Former NFL star Herschel Walker will be back in the cage early in the new year. Walker, who is 1-0 in his MMA career, will be part of the Strikeforce card set for Jan. 29 in San Jose, Calif.
Rua facing Evans
UFC 128 in New Jersey will see light-heavyweight champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua defend his title against former champ Rashad Evans, according to numerous reports. The event will take place March 19 at the Prudential Center in Newark and air on pay-per-view.
