Sonnen's UFC shots splittin' sides

VANCOUVER — Chael Sonnen has officially become the UFC’s top mouthpiece.

The American fighter, who will battle champ Anderson ‘Spider’ Silva in August, had the UFC Fight Club fans in stitches before yesterday’s packed weigh-ins — in which all fighters for Saturday’s

UFC 115 made weight.

Sonnen, who spoke to fans in a Q-and-A format before the fighters took to the scales, took some side-splitting shots at the man many consider the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

“I’m outing Anderson Silva as a fraud,” said Sonnen, who says the lanky Brazilian speaks perfect English but pretends not to when the subject isn’t to his liking.

“He also comes into the cage and bows. He doesn’t come from a bowing culture. In Brazil, if you bow, they

club you over the head,” Sonnen said.

The 33-year-old — who is running for a State Representative seat in his native Oregon — wasn’t finished there, promising he’d have Silva on his back like a “porn star with a mortgage” during their

UFC 117 main event.

There were no sacred cows for Sonnen, who is quickly becoming a fan favourite.

On Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic: “If you want to get ‘Cro Cop’ the fighter’s autograph, get it within the next

24 hours. After that, he’ll be Cro Cop, the former UFC fighter.”

On who is the best athlete in the UFC: “Georges

St-Pierre is the best athlete. Best pure athlete when it comes to sport. But he better stay with those midgets at the 170-lb. class.”

St-Pierre has been rumoured to be eyeing a move up to the 185-lb. middleweight class, which could pit him against Sonnen.

But the decorated wrestler saved his best material for Silva.

“He’s got a Nogueira brothers black belt, which is a

bit like getting a free toy with your Happy Meal,” Sonnen said.

“A Nogueira brothers black belt. What does that mean? One guy’s a punching bag, and the other one I just ignore.”

Sonnen says Silva owes him his job.

Following the despicable display of showboating by Silva during his fight with Demian Maia, Sonnen says the middleweight champ was about to be pink-slipped.

“I saved Anderson Silva’s job,” Sonnen said.

“Uncle Dana was going to give him his walking papers, and I begged him, begged him to give him one more fight. Let me retire him.”

Saturday’s UFC 115 from Vancouver will feature a main event between Chuck Liddell and Rich Franklin as well as a co-main event between Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic and Patrick Barry. It is available in Canada on pay-per-view.
