Don’t tell Rich Franklin that Saturday’s main event at GM Place is a brawl between two over-the-hill fighters.

Despite the quickest sell out in UFC history – though many tickets landed in the hands of scalpers – most fans moaned at the thought of the Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell headlining a show with “Ace”.

But for Franklin, a win Saturday vaults the seasoned warrior back into contention.

“It’s always the goal,” Franklin says. “I have a great opportunity here fighting Chuck, but eventually these are the kind of things you want in the past, and look toward the title.”

Franklin admits it wasn’t wise to step in against Vitor Belfort at UFC 103 last September after two grueling battles earlier in the year.

He was promptly disposed of in three minutes.

But being over-extended doesn’t make you washed up, Franklin contends.

“I was looking for some time off after the Wanderlei fight last year,” the former math teacher said. “But they needed me for [UFC] 103 and … I said yes.”

Now Franklin says he’s back in top condition.

“This was about the time frame that I wanted to jump back in. I had some time off, had the ability to physically reset, mentally reset. The timing was perfect,” he said.
