It was a bad week for Canadian fighters in the UFC. Both Montreal's David "The Crow" Loiseau and Alberta's Jason MacDonald were dismissed by the fight club. Both are coming off losses at UFC 97 in Montreal.
Loiseau looked disappointing in his loss to Ed Herman, while the always-exciting MacDonald lost to Nate Quarry. Fellow Albertan Jason "Dooms" Day was also released by the UFC late last month.
Stars get shelf life
How mainstream is MMA? Wal-Mart will begin selling UFC action figures this month. The collectibles -- made by Markham- based Round 5 -- include figures of Randy "The Natural" Couture, Frank Mir, Wanderlei Silva, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Anderson Silva.
Soszynski steps in
Winnipeg's Krzysztof Soszynski will be back in the cage barely a month after his UFC 97 win over Brian Stann. Soszynski has been named as a replacement for Houston Alexander, who was forced to withdraw from UFC 98 with a hand injury. Soszynski will take on Andre Gusmao at the May 23 card in Las Vegas.
UFC adds punch to 101
The UFC has confirmed more fights for its first Philadelphia show. Added to UFC 101 -- which is headlined by B.J. Penn and Kenny Florian in a lightweight battle -- is a fight between The Ultimate Fighter 7 winner Amir Sadollah and the unbeaten Johny Hendricks.
Also announced are fights between Tamdan McCrory and John Howard, Matt Riddle and Dan Cramer, and George Sotiropoulos and Rob Emerson. UFC 101 goes Aug. 8 at the Wachovia Center.
Gonzaga tipped for 102
Numerous sources are reporting that heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga is set to take on Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 102 in Portland, Ore. The Aug. 29 event is also expected to feature Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Demian Maia vs. Nate Marquardt, and Keith Jardine vs. Thiago Silva.
