Another lamb goes to the slaughter as Canadian Patrick Cote steps up to challenge Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title.

BLOW BY BLOW

Hello everyone and welcome to the UFC 90 Blow by Blow. Once again, I am your host Neil Springer.

To make up for the relatively weak main event, the UFC has stacked this card with some pretty interesting fights.

Sean (Muscle Shark) Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin

Round one

They exchange and Sherk takes him down against the fence. He has the hooks and Griffin stands up. He throws him down and they restart. Griffin hits a nice legkick, but eats a couple fists from Sherk. Griffin avoids a takedown.

Sherk presses him against the cage and sweeps him. Griffin stands up, but Sherk has a leg. They separate and Griffin hits another great legkick.

Griffin tries a headkick and then shoots! Sherk stuffs it and takes his back again! Griffin stands up and Sherk moves away. Griffin hits a nice uppercut.

He follows with a nice left-hook, but Sherk counters. Good first round; got to give it to Sherk.

Round two

Griffin lands a nice bodykick, but Sherk shoots again. Griffin avoids it, but eats a couple fists in the process. Nice overhand right from Griffin. Sherk catches him with a right-hook, but Griffin avoids any more shots.

Good bodyshots from Sherk. Great legkick from Griffin and they're really starting to let loose with the flurries!

They calm down a bit and Sherk tries a takedown. Griffin avoids it. Sherk lands a headkick, but Griffin isn't fazed.

Great fight. Griffin needs to do something to take this.

Round three

They're swinging for the fences and Griffin catches him with a nasty overhand right. Sherk just eats it and comes back with a nice jab. Griffin with another hard right.

Griffin seems to be landing first, but for every punch he throws, Sherk counters. This has turned into a kickboxing match. Sherk is bleeding now.

Griffin lands a nice body punch. They just keep swinging, both landing and the round ends. I would not want to be a judge here. Great fight.

Sherk takes a close decision!

Fabricio (Vai Cavalo) Werdum vs. Junior (Cigano) Dos Santos

Round one

Werdum lands a legkick and follows it up with another. There's a third. Now Dos Santos returns the favour. Werdum hits another legkick, but Dos Santos nails him with a huge uppercut! He follows up with some strikes on the ground and it's over!

What a huge upset!

Rich (No Love) Clementi vs. Gray (The Bully) Maynard

Round one

Both guys are tentative, but Clementi looks confident. He's barely keeping his hands up. Maynard lands a nice right and comes forward, but Clementi steps out. Clementi hits a nice legkick, but Maynard clips him with an uppercut.

Maynard attempts a shoot and lands a knee. He hits a bodyshot. Maynard tags him on the chin with a right and then gets a takedown. He's in Clementi's half-guard and works some bodyshots.

They're now in the full-guard. Clementi ends the round with a flurry from the bottom.

Round two

Maynard hits a left-hook and then follows with an straight-right. Clementi answers with a legkick. Maynard fights for a takedown; he gets it! Clementi with an excellent sweep, but Maynard has a standing guillotine.

Clementi pops his head out, but gets taken down. He tries an armbar, but Maynard gets his arm loose. They're in half-guard and Clementi is trying to sweep out. Maynard avoids it and puts him back down.

Maynard pops his leg out and takes the back. Clementi spins out, but Maynard stands up and gets side-control. Round is over and Clementi needs something big here.

Round three

Clementi locks his hands around Clementi's waist and slams him! The crowd is getting restless with the lack of action. They're in the guard and Clementi tries some elbows.

Maynard has side-control, but Clementi takes him back to half-guard. Maynard has his back, but Clementi stands up. Maynard takes him down again.

Maynard hits a knee to the body, but Clementi sweeps. He takes Maynard's back, but gets taken down again. The round is over.

Maynard takes a decision.

Josh (Kos) Koscheck vs. Thiago (Pit Bull) Alves

Round one

They trade and Alves hits a good left-hook. Kos trips, but gets back up. Alves lands a nasty left-hook to the ear and follows with a headkick! Kos is hurt and tries for a takedown. Alves avoids it and they separate. That was close.

Now Kos comes forward and lands a solid flurry. He follows with a legkick and now he's turning on the pressure! Alves comes back with a jab followed by a legkick.

Kos lands a good bodyshot and tries for a takedown. Alves stuffs it and follows with another legkick. Round ends.

Round two

Alves lands a jab, but Kos comes back with a legkick. Alves answers with one of his own. Kos comes forward with a huge headkick, but Alves blocks it! Alves tries a legkick, but Kos catches it. They press on the fence, but nothing comes of it.

Kos with a bodykick, but Alves is stalking him. Kos tries another takedown, but can't get it. The round ends.

Round three

Kos needs something big here. Alves lands a hard knee and Kos is hurt! He tries a desperation takedown and manages to avoid any further damage. Alves almost buckles him a legkick! He lands another one. Kos comes forward, but can't put him away. Another good fight.

Alves takes a decision.

Anderson (The Spider) Silva vs. Patrick (The Predator) Cote

Round one

Cote takes octagon control and lands a few legkicks. Silva is judging his distance and moving around a lot. He hits a legkick and Cote tries a headkick.

Silva hits a tough legkick and tries to get the Thai clinch. He comes forward and lands a nice straight-right. He catches him with a headkick and follows with a knee, but Cote just eats it! Silva almost trips him with a legkick and the round ends.

Round two

Silva starts with a nice left-jab and they clinch on the cage. They separate, Silva comes back with a body kick and takes him down. Silva postures up from the guard, but Cote lands a nice elbow.

Silva stands out and offers his hand to help Cote up! What a gentleman.

Silva is now using Kung Fu hand movements. That has to be a first in the modern-day UFC. He tries a legkick, but Cote catches and presses him against the fence. Silva lands some hard knees and the round ends.

Round three

Cote has made it further than any of Silva's UFC opponents so far. Cote's bouncing around he falls over. Oh no, he's hurt and they end the fight. The replay shows he blew out his ACL. Ouch.

What an unfortunate ending. Cote was hanging in there and then his knee just gives out.
