BJ Penn and Sean Sherk faceoff for the UFC Lightweight Championship. Over the last few months, the two have been engaged in a war of words. Now it’s time for them to duke it out.

Also, Wanderlei Silva looks to stop Keith Jardine’s momentum dead in its tracks and Lyoto Machida puts his unbeaten record on the line against Tito Ortiz.

BLOW BY BLOW

Hello everyone and welcome to the UFC 84 Blow by Blow. I'm your host Neil Springer.

This is a pretty stacked card and hopefully we get to see some of the dark matches on the broadcast as well.

Thiago Silva vs. Antonio (Samuray) Mendes

Round one

Mendes throws a huge headkick and knocks Silva down! Silva's back up, but he gets hit again! They stand up and clinch on the fence.

Silva takes him down and secures side-control. He takes the mount and starts blasting Mendes. It's over! Great comeback. Jose and I are both 1 for 1.

(Huntington Beach Bad Boy) Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida

Round one

Machida starts with some legkicks. Tito tries one of his, but misses. Ortiz is trying to corner him. He makes a takedown attempt, but Machida stuffs it.

Tito hits a nice knee and tries a takedown, but to no avail. Machida is keeping his distance and working in his legkicks.

Machida lands a kick to the body. Ortiz tries some jabs, but can't seem to land them. Nice two-kick combo by Machida. Ortiz looks frustrated. Machida takes Ortiz down and starts blasting him! The round ends! Man, that was almost over.

Round two

Machida starts working his legkicks again. Machida is picking Ortiz apart here -- he stays out of harm's way and is continually landing his shots.

The crowd is getting restless. Machida keeps landing some beautiful faints -- he fakes a lowkick and then goes high. He lands more legkicks -- these are going to add up. Tito tries a takedown, but Machida reverses!

They stand up. Flying knee attempt by Machida! Ortiz just can't figure him out. The round expires. Another good round for Machida. This isn't looking good for Ortiz.

Round three

More legkicks from Machida. Ortiz has to do something now -- he can't let this go to decision. Tito shoots again, but just can't get a hold of him. They clinch on the fence and Tito works some dirty boxing. Machida reverses, but they stay stuck to the cage.

Machida blasts him with a knee! Ortiz manages to pull guard! That was close! Tito gets a triangle choke, but Machida escapes! It's over! That was a great round.

We go to the judges and... Machida takes it! Jose and I are two for two!

Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic

Round one

Reljic tries some kicks to the head, but Gouveia blocks. He hits a nice jab and tries more kicks. They exchange punches and Gouveia is having a difficult time. Those headkicks are nasty, if Reljic lands one clean, it's over.

Gouveia rocks him and moves in for the kill, but Reljic jumps into guard! Reljic tries an omoplata as the round expires.

Round two

Gouveia has a huge bruise on his right arm. Reljic tries more headkicks, but he's not setting them up at all. He just goes right for them. Gouveia blasts him again and starts working the ground-and-pound! They stand up again.

Reljic nails him with a left-straight and starts pounding like crazy! It's over! Reljic wins! Jose and I are now two for three.

(The Axe Murderer) Wanderlei Silva vs. (The Dean of Mean) Keith Jardine

My buddy Jeff just made a bold statement: if Silva loses, not only should he retire from MMA, but we should retire from watching MMA. It's just not worth the heartache anymore.

I don't know if I would go that far, but as far as I'm concerned Silva should win this.

Round one

Silva blasts him and it's over! Silva knocks Jardine out! Jardine is unconscious! I'm glad I don't have to give up watching MMA. Jose and I are two for four.

(The Prodigy) BJ Penn vs. (Muscle Shark) Sean Sherk

Round one

Sherk gets booed on his way into the octagon. Sherk tries a takedown, but can't get it. Sherk lands a couple jabs. They exchange shots, but BJ's seemed to land better. Sherk is a little bloody under the eye.

Solid right hand from BJ. They exchange knees and the round expires. BJ's striking looked better and he did more damage.

Round two

We get more of the same to start. Sherk is starting to work his legkicks, but BJ lands a knee. The crowd starts a "steroids" chant. Both guys are tentative here, but BJ is landing more shots. More stiff shots from Penn. Sherk is bleeding from his other cheek now. Another good round for Penn.

Round three

Sherk can't afford to keep this standing. Sherk tries a flurry, but he still can't hit Penn effectively. Nice legkick from Penn. Sherk seems to be protecting his right hand. Goldie and Rogan are speculating that it's injured.

Penn blasts him with a knee, moves in for the kill, but the round expires! Sherk can't continue. Penn wins!

Jose and I end the night at two for five. Thanks for joining me for the UFC 84 Blow by Blow!
