Hello everybody and welcome to the UFC 82 Blow by Blow. I'm your host Neil Springer. I've decided to put the actual coverage on a brand new page from now on. These columns get ridiculously long after a while.
You can check out the predictions via the link on the right side of this page. I hope this clears up the clutter a bit.
Onto the fights!
Chris (The Professor) Wilson vs. Jon Fitch
Nice leg kick from Fitch and they exchange a couple of knees. Wilson looks very loose and comfortable for his debut. Fitch tries a takedown, but eats a fist. Wilson is landing more in the stand-up exchanges.
Fitch takes him to the mat, but can't quite get a top position. The ref stands them up. Wilson lands some kicks, but Fitch takes him down. Wilson tries an omoplata, but has to transition to guard. The round is over. Wilson took that one.
Fitch tries another takedown and really had to fight to get it. Wilson has him in his guard and Fitch works in some body shots. He passes to side-control and hits some elbows and knees. He's not doing tons of damage, though.
Fitch passes to full-mount, Wilson brings him back to half-guard. Fitch is back in side-control, but the round ends. That was all Fitch. This next round will decide the winner.
Fitch takes octagon control and heís pushing the pace here. Wilson tries a takedown, but canít quite get it.
Wilson is looking a bit gun-shy now; he's not really doing much. Fitch keeps working in the leg-kicks. The crowd is booing, but that has more to do with them being ignorant than anything else.
Fitch takes him down and works in some elbows from Wilson's guard. Wilson has a triangle choke, but the clock runs out!
Fitch gets the judges' nod and I'm one for one tonight!
They show footage of Mark Coleman being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. Coleman announces that he'll be fighting Brock Lesnar! All right, one-dimension wrestler vs. one-dimension wrestler.
Yushin (Thunder) Okami vs. Evan Tanner
Tanner takes octagon control and hits a nice straight-punch. Okami blasts him with a straight-left, but Tanner takes him down. They both stand up and are pressed on the fence.
Okami reverses and they separate. Okami gets the Thai clinch and hits a knee. They restart and the crowd is booing again. Somebody please teach these people about the sport of mixed martial arts.
Tanner comes at him, but the time is up. Okami got the better of that round.
Tanner comes out with a leg-kick, but eats a straight-left. Okami hits a nice body-kick and gets the Thai clinch. Tanner breaks free and they separate. Okami is landing that left-straight with no problem here. Itís not doing tons of damage, but itís giving Tanner something to think about.
Okami get the clinch again and blasts Tanner with a beautiful knee! It's over! Tanner is out!
Well, I'm one for two now.
Alessio (Legionarius) Sakara vs. Chris (The Crippler) Leben
Leben pushes forward and is doing a nice job of mixing up his strikes. Sakara starts landing, but they don't seem to faze Leben. They start blasting one another, but neither man is too successful.
Sakara nails him, but Leben just keeps on coming. Leben flips out, rocks Sakara, lands some unanswered ground shots and it's over! Yes, I'm two for three!
(The Texas Crazy Horse) Heath Herring vs. Cheick Kongo
Herring comes out to 'The Good, The Bad and They Ugly' theme song. Awesome; Clint Eastwood would be proud.
Herring charges right out nails Kongo! He recovers and they're on the fence. Kongo takes him down, but they're back up. Herring tries a kick, but is taken down again. Herring reverses and has a standing guillotine against the cage. Kongo works in some knees and now he's on top.
Kongo mixes it up between body punches and headshots. Herring counters and they're back up. Kongo reverses that and hits some punches and hammer-fists to the body. The crowd boos again. This crowd seriously sucks. Round is over.
Herring tries a sweep, but Kongo counters and takes him down. Herring hits a nice upkick and the ref stands them up. Kongo takes him down and tries for the back. Herring reverses and has north-south control. He switches to side-mount and blasts him with knees to the body and shoulder! Those have to hurt.
That round goes to Herring for damage alone.
Huge kick to the body from Herring, Kongo eats it and takes him down. Cheick works in his own knees and the crowd is booing some more. Seriously, do these people think they're at a boxing match or something? Learn the sport or shut up.
Herring charges, but is taken down. He gets up and finally takes him to the mat. He starts with some punches and more knees to the body. He's keeping him down and is controlling the fight now. Herring has full-mount, lands some punches and it's over! I think Heath's won this.
Herring takes it by split decision! I've never been this happy to be wrong.
Anderson (The Spider) Silva vs. Dan Henderson
Silva comes out to the theme song from Steven Seagal's 'Exit Wounds.' I'm starting to think I picked the wrong guy now.
Silva refuses to touch gloves. Henderson works some leg-kicks and the crowd is booing already. I'm tired of this audience. They start exchanging now and Anderson is throwing some nice kicks.
Henderson takes him down! He's in half-guard and starts utilizing the hammer-fists and is covering Silva's mouth. Hendo barely misses with a huge elbow and now has full-mount! Silva spins out and they're in the guard. Round is over and Henderson takes it!
Silva takes octagon control and is doing a nice job of cutting the cage off. Silva gets him down, but Hendo stands up. Henderson works in the knees from the Greco-Roman clinch. Silva blasts him, but Henderson gets the half-guard! That was close.
Silva takes his back, secures the body-triangle and gets the rear-naked choke! It's over! Silva is without a doubt the best fighter at 185 lbs.! I end the night at two for five in my predictions.
Thanks for joining me and goodnight!
