Tributes pour in for dead athlete
The sudden passing of former UFC middleweight champ Evan Tanner has sparked a wave of Internet tributes to the Texas fighter. Tanner, who was found dead following a camping trip in California, was a respected, mostly self-taught fighter. Police say Tanner's death appears to be heat-related. Tanner's body was discovered about 5 km from his campsite on Wednesday near the Palo Verdes Mountains. Temperatures had reached 40 C in previous days.
NOV. 15 UFC CARD GROWS
The Randy Couture/Brock Lesnar fight set for Nov. 15 is shaping up to be one of the biggest cards in UFC history. Numerous sources are reporting one of the undercard fights will feature Wanderlei Silva taking on Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in a light-heavyweight tilt.
VEGAS SHOW DATE MOVED
Affliction's Oct. 11 show slated for the Thomas & Mack Centre in Las Vegas has been moved to January. Affliction will hold its second show, Day of Reckoning, at the Honda Centre in Anaheim instead. Mmajunkie.com is reporting Fedor Emelianenko will be on the card.
HORODECKI SIGNS ON
Chris Horodecki of London, Ont., has signed a three-fight deal with Affliction, according to sherdog.com. Horodecki was scheduled to take on Dan Lauzon at Affliction's now-postponed Oct. 11 show.
STRIKEFORCE SCORES DEAL
Strikeforce has struck a Canadian TV deal. The Score will begin broadcasting Strikeforce fights beginning with Strikeforce At The Mansion II next Saturday at 10:30 p.m. The fight card is being hosted at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. There will also be a weekly show featuring Strikeforce fights and fighter profiles.
ORTIZ TO REVEAL PLAN
Internet reports say Tito Ortiz will announce before the end of the month where he plans to fight. Ortiz has been a coveted free agent since ending his contract with the UFC. Rumoured possible suitors for the Huntington Beach Bad Boy include Affliction and EliteXC.
