Fighter brings the heat"The Experiment" returns for local UCW show
By KIRK PENTON -- Sun Media
Tony Condello has dubbed his upcoming Ultimate Cage Wars show "Hell in the Cage."
We have a good idea which mixed martial artist is going to be feeling the heat that night: whomever Krzysztof (The Experiment) Soszynski fights.
The 30-year-old Winnipegger, who is a partner in Ultimate Cage Wars, has fought only once before on a UCW card, and that was more than three years ago.
Condello, the UCW promoter, is excited to get Soszynski back in the cage in front of his hometown fans, even though his opponent hasn't been determined. "Hell in the Cage," which is the 11th installment of the UCW series, goes Friday, April 11, at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
Soszynski won the TKO heavyweight championship in 2006 and fought last year on the International Fight League circuit. He is currently training in California with the Team Quest mixed martial arts squad, which includes UFC and PRIDE fighter Dan Henderson.
Soszynski is a lean, mean 6-foot-1 and 250 pounds. He has a shaved head and a glare that looks like it could inflict physical pain in an opponent.
"When I met him, he was training to be a professional wrestler," Condello said. "I promoted him as a wrestler for three years, but he was killing his opponents.
"I told him, 'You can't do that. These guys have to go to work the next morning.' It wasn't his bag. Now he's hurting people in mixed martial arts."
When Soszynski fought on the first UCW card, on Oct. 29, 2004, Condello knew the native of Poland had found his calling. It didn't take long for Soszynski to knock out Chris Thiel with a punch.
"The guy's nose was on the other side of his face," Condello said.
There are nine other fights on the Hell in the Cage card, including a female battle between Margaret Mitchell and Joey Ayotte. It will mark the second time that ladies have appeared on a UCW card, and Condello promises that they'll put on one heck of a show.
"They're tougher than the men, I'll tell you," he said. "I've never witnessed anything like that in my life. These ladies, they go at it. That really surprised me."
Other fighters scheduled to step in the cage are Winnipeg's Kevin (Mongoose) Manderson, former French Olympic judoka Ferrid Kheder and Rory McDonell.
VIP tables and tickets can be purchased through Condello at 229-9173 or through Phar-Syde Confectionery at 117 Regent Ave.
General admission tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
