UFC heavyweight Stefan Struve has returned to fighting after a heart problem put his career in serious jeopardy.

In 2009, Struve has an echocardiogram (EKG) and, according to Los Angeles-based doctor Ram Dandillaya, tests revealed Struve had blood leaking into the back of his heart.

But it wasn't until a fainting episode in 2013 that investigations into the prior condition uncovered the real problem.

“At that time, the patient was felt to be at risk and was advised not to continue with his athletic activity,” Dandillaya said to mmajunkie.com. Dandillaya sent a detailed medical background on the fighter to Dr. Jeff Davidson, the UFC’s chief medical consultant.

Turns out Struve had a condition called a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) (a condition that causes blood to back up in the heart and high blood pressure, among other symptoms).
