The government of Saskatchewan effectively legalized mixed martial arts fights in the province Wednesday.

The government approved the creation of a provincial athletics commission that will have the "authority to sanction professional combative sports, including mixed martial arts and boxing events," according to a news release on the province's website. The commission is expected to be up and running by next summer.

“It's great news," UFC Canada's director of operations Tom Wright told Toronto Sun MMA writer Neil Springer. "I certainly have been in conversation with the provincial government for quite some time. They've taken the appropriate step in recognizing that it is a growing sport, but it's also a sport that needs to be regulated and sanctioned.

"We want to make sure the health and safety of the athletes is first and foremost. I'm really excited that Saskatchewan is going to be joining the majority of Canadian provinces by regulating MMA."
