TORONTO - Ryan Puzan says he performed CPR for 40 minutes on a Hamilton MMA fighter who collapsed — and later died — backstage at an amateur cage fight event in Michigan Saturday.

During the bout at the American Legion, Puzan — a certified first responder in the crowd who was there to watch his little brother compete — noticed Felix Pablo Elochukwu become increasingly fatigued during the third round.

“He was falling apart more by being exhausted,” Puzan, 23, said in a phone interview from Michigan Thursday. “After the fight, he had a hard time getting up out of the ring. What made me spring into action was they were dragging him across the room to sit down. I ran up to him to see how he was doing and he was in and out of consciousness right then and there.”

Puzan noticed one of the show promoters from Amateur Fighting Club standing near him and urged him to call 911 immediately. He was told staff had already called paramedics and they were on their way.
