The fact Kim Couture fought as part of a mixed martial arts card last weekend while under medical suspension in New Jersey is being chalked up to a "misunderstanding" by the Calgary Combative Sports Commission.

It's protocol for commissions to honour suspensions, even though it's not bound by law.

"She believed the matter had ultimately been resolved. That turned out not to be the case," said a statement from the Calgary commission.

Couture, who lives in Las Vegas, lost to Calgary's Sheila Bird in the AX Combat 1 card at the Telus Convention Centre last Friday. Couture was unconscious after being put in a leg scissor hold, which has caused an ongoing review of referee Len Koivisto.

It then came to light Couture was under medical suspension in New Jersey after a fight in October 2010, having failed to submit proof her facial injuries were healed.

According the Calgary commission, Couture "complied with all the medical and licensing requirements" in Calgary.

She has submitted medical reports to the New Jersey commission, and her medical suspension will be lifted if the physician who initiated the suspension clears her, Nick Lembo of the New Jersey commission told MMAweekly.com.

Lembo added Couture, "will likely face a disciplinary suspension after clearing her medical suspension for fighting under suspension."
