OTTAWA - Area MMA fans are buzzing about Wreck MMA’s Strong and Proud card at Casino Lac-Leamy in Gatineau on Friday night.
With Wreck banking on a fall show in Ottawa, the lineup is strong for Strong and Proud, with more than 1,000 spectators expected to be on hand.
There’s a bit of ill will involved with the match between UFC veteran Mark “Boots” Holst vs. Markhaile “Showtime” Wedderburn.
Holst, who recently announced he will retire from MMA after this fight as he looks to focus on the opening of his own MMA school, got into a parking lot argument with his opponent in August. An Internet challenge was made and accepted.
Holst had to move up to 170 pounds for the fight, while Wedderburn had to drop 35 or so.
“It’s a Catch-22 situation,” said Nick Castiglia, president of REC Promotions Inc. “Showtime is so much bigger, but he’s had to cut out so much weight to get down. Mark is at 170 right now.
“He’s not tired. He’s not depleted.”
Castiglia is excited about the card, which available on Internet pay-per-view at gofightlive.tv and to be broadcast on The Score on tape delay in two weeks. It will feature a solid combination of established and up-and-coming fighters.
The co-main event will see a clash between seasoned veteran Joe “Diesel” Riggs and rising star Jordan “Young Guns” Mein.
In addition, Nova Scotia’s Matt MacGrath takes on B.C.’s Kalib Starnes in middleweight action.
“To have this event broadcast on The Score shows that all our hard work is paying off and that Wreck MMA is one of the most exciting organizations in Canada,” said Castiglia.
