EDMONTON - Jason (The Athlete) MacDonald now considers himself a free-agent gladiator.
After his contract was terminated after his last MFC fight in December, the Red Deer resident has one thing on his mind ... to find a path back into the UFC.
MacDonald is looking for some redemption Friday night when he faces Matt Horwich in the main event of the inaugural ‘Let’s Get It on’ MMA card.
Horwich beat MacDonald back in October of 2004.
“He beat me first time around by an armbar with about five seconds to go in the first round, so it’s a fight that I jumped at,” said MacDonald. “It’s a chance to erase a loss off my record and get back in the win column against Matt Horwich.
“I’m excited about this fight. To be the first main event in the first-ever ‘Let’s Get It On’ card, I’m excited about it. The concept, you know, west against east and the best fighters in a tournament with each other, I’m looking forward to be in the main event in a number of cards.”
Neither MacDonald nor Horwich are actually in the elimination tournament, so MacDonald is looking for any scrap he can get now to rebuild his name in the UFC, where he fought eight times.
“I’m no longer under contract with the MFC,” MacDonald said. “I don’t know whether I’ll be fighting in the MFC any more. That’s up to Mark Pavelich, if I get a good fight offered to me. Right now, I’m a free agent.”
MacDonald believes there’s plenty of opportunities out there now for a fighter of his calibre.
“I’m not signing with anybody,” said MacDonald. “There’s lots of options outside the UFC for good fights.”
McDonald is happy with his last start, last month in Montreal, when he beat Vernon White.
“I came away with a good submission victory in that one and am hoping to carry the momentum into this one,” said MacDonald. “To not be tied down, you have the ability to take good fights. The only organization I want to be tied down exclusively with is the UFC. I’m taking the best fight for me to get me back there as quick as I can.”
