I remember sitting around the old Newsboys Boxing Club in the eastern fringe of downtown Toronto a few years ago with club owner Tony Unitas regaling us with stories of his career in the sport.
Now, Tony’s tales were about as tall as Raptors rookie centre Jonas Valanciunas, so you had to take them with a grain of salt — like the time he fought a “tough little Filipino” named Ferdinand Marcos while serving with the U.S. Marines in WWII. Hey, that could have happened, but ... Well, let’s just say we always gave the Tony the benefit of the doubt. He was a boxing guy and boxing guys like to tell stories. And back in the day, I liked listening to them.
