Laval's Adrian Diaconu fought bravely, desperately going for a badly needed knockout in the final round, but it wasn't enough to overcome a slick and poised Chad Dawson.
Dawson boxed smartly, controlling the ring to keep Diaconu in range of a sharp left hand. He threw and landed more punches cleanly, leaving the Canadian's face red and swollen. Diaconu tried repeatedly to land bombs, but his power punches found thin air more than Dawson's chin. While he rallied in rounds 9 and 12, landing clean right hands and hurting the American, for most of the fight Dawson was too quick to be caught.
Dawson, the former WBC light heavyweight champion, won by unanimous decision and is now in position to fight the winner of the title fight between champion Jean Pascal and hall of famed Bernard Hopkins.
