Mike Tyson only accepted a role in The Hangover to fund his drug habit, according to a frank new interview with the star.

The former boxing champion appeared as himself in the 2009 movie, in which he sings along to Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight and punches Zach Galifianakis' character in a Las Vegas hotel suite.

Tyson reveals he took on the role to make money to pay for drugs. He was stunned by the comedy's runaway success.

He tells U.S. radio show Gridlock, "I was doing that to supply my drug habit... I said, 'Wow, This is going to be really good. We're going to sell this stuff on 42nd Street on bootleg and make a lot of money.' This is my best thinking on drugs... It wasn't that way. It was an international success."

The 44 year old has been sober since the death of his four-year-old daughter Exodus last year.
