A much-anticipated outdoor boxing card at Telus Field on Aug. 8 has been postponed on account of pain.

Heavyweight headliner and co-promoter Sheldon Hinton suffered a pulled groin muscle during a spirited sparring session earlier this week.

With the injury not responding to three days' of rest and treatment, Hinton has postponed the ballpark card until Sept. 12.

"That'll teach me to chase little guys around the ring," Hinton said yesterday.

"I was sparring with (middleweight) Adam Trupish, and he moves pretty good in there. I stepped across after throwing a hook and felt the muscle pull. It hurt, but I figured if I just rested for a few days, it would be fine.

"Unfortunately, it's worse than we thought. I've been advised to not do any sparring or running for three weeks, so we had no choice but to change the date."

Hinton said that at this point everything is "still a go" -- including his opponent, world-ranked contender Monte Barrett of New York -- but the delay might yet force some changes to the card.

"I've already heard some people talking smack about this, saying I just don't wanna fight, but that's a load of crap," said Hinton.

"I'm just not going in there at less than 100% to grab a payday. The haters and small-minded critics can say what they like, but I won't go ahead at less than 100%.

"The easiest thing would be to just scrap the show, but that's not my way, man. I'm in this for the long haul."
