Beer, blood and breasts.
Sounds like the perfect Friday night for a boys' night out.
Local promoter John Vernaus is promising the total package for fight fans on Friday during King John Boxing's Colosseum V card at Winnipeg Convention Centre.
Not only are the entertaining disciplines of boxing, mixed martial arts and Muay Thai kickboxing on the agenda, but pillow fighting will be making its Winnipeg debut as well.
Yes, pillow fighting.
Four women will participate in a five-minute, tag-team pillow fight. Global TV's Tyler Calver will serve as the celebrity referee for the exhibition, which will pit the A+ Blondes against The Naughty Squad.
"That might be the fight of the night," Vernaus said with a chuckle yesterday. "We might have to change. King John may have turned over a new leaf. It might just be pillow fighting.
"You don't need a boxing commission for that."
Vernaus is taking a page from The Pillow Fight League, a venture that began in southern Ontario two years ago. Friday night's exhibition has nothing to do with the PFL, but Vernaus is planning to sex his up a little bit.
"It's our own style, King John style," Vernaus said. "We looked on the Internet at that stuff that's going on, and it's a little too butchy for us. They were dressed up kind of butchy, so we did our own thing here a little bit differently."
Vernaus got an eyeful last week when his pillow fighters did a test run.
"The last time they did a rehearsal the 44Ds flew out," Vernaus said. "I told her, 'Don't change a thing. Same uniform you're wearing right there, only looser.' "
Friday night's main event will be a Muay Thai bout between Milwaukee's Duke Roufus and Brazil's Eduardo Maiorino de Morais. It is scheduled to be the farewell fight for the 37-year-old Roufus, who is a four-time world Muay Thai heavyweight champ.
Winnipeg's Joe (El Dirte) Doerksen is slated to battle Brazilian Emerson Nunes da Silva in a mixed martial arts tilt, which will be the final bout in Manitoba for Doerksen, a UFC and PRIDE fighter.
Doerksen will have UFC veteran Jeremy Horn, one of only three men to have beaten UFC legend Chuck Liddell, in his corner as well.
Pine Falls' Larry (Razor) Sharpe, the current WBA NABA Intercontinental super welterweight champ, is also on the card, but his opponent is to be determined.
There will be 11 fights in all, including five MMAs, four boxing matches and two Muay Thai battles.
