Anderson (The Spider) Silva defends his UFC welterweight title against Thales Leites and Chuck (The Iceman) Liddell takes on Mauricio (Shogun) Rua.

Hello everyone and welcome to the UFC 97 Blow by Blow. I'm your host Neil Springer, filing live from the Bell Centre in Montreal. Let's get to the fights.

Eliot Marshall vs. Vinicius Magalhaes

Round one

They touch gloves and Magalhaes comes forward, delivering a legkick. Marshall tries a big overhand right. Magalhaes charges, but can't grab hold of him. Magalhaes goes for a head kick, but it's blocked.

Marshall tries his own, but it's also blocked. Magalhaes attempts a clinch and barely misses a knee. The crowd starts booing for no reason at all. Marshall delivers a solid leg kick. Magalhaes feeds him a solid body kick.

Neither fighter has attempted to take this to the ground. They swing for the fences as the round ends.

Round two

Magalhaes takes octagon control again, but Marshall seems to be landing cleaner shots. They clinch on the cage and separate. Marshall hits an inside leg kick, but eats a hard body kick from Magalhaes. Marshall tags him with a nice two-punch combo.

Magalhaes tries a head kick as the audience starts booing again. Starting to wonder if these people have ever watched MMA before.

Magalhaes comes forward, throwing punches, but Marshall avoids him. Marshall tries a head kick, but catches Magalhaes with another combo. He follows it with a leg kick. Marshall seems to be taking control of the tempo.

Marshall tries a kick, but is taken down. Magalhaes is on top and trying to pound him out. Marshall kicks him off and they're back up as the round expires.

Round three

Magalhaes takes octagon control, but he's having a hard time cornering Marshall. Marshall lands a hard leg kick. The crowd starts booing again.

Marshall gets a nice uppercut in, but is tagged with a right hook. Marshall feeds him a couple jabs. Magalhaes is looking tired now. Marshall lands an accidental low blow. Magalhaes shoots and gets Marshall down. He starts raining with strikes and the fight ends.

Winner: Eliot Marshall by unanimous decision

Ryo (Piranha) Chonan vs. TJ Grant

Round one

Grant swarms him with punches early, but Chonan throws him and they're in the guard. Chonan attempts some shots to the head, but they're not landing clean. Grant almost gets hold of an arm, but Chonan counters and regains his guard position.

Chonan passes to half-guard, but can't keep it. Chonan tags him with a little ground-and-pound. The crowd starts chanting for Grant. Grant tries an omoplata, but Chonan escapes and feeds him some punches.

Grant kicks him off and they're back up. Grant starts tagging Chonan and takes him down. He passes to half-guard, but gets kicked off. Grant tags Chonan with a hard right-hook and the round ends.

Round two

Grant charges, but Chonan attempts a takedown on the fence. He gets it and they're back to guard. Grant stands up and presses Chonan against the cage. He gets the takedown and has Chonan's back. He goes for a rear-naked choke, but can't secure it.

Grant tries again, but Chonan spins out and is now on top in half-guard. Chonan stands up and lands a hard right to Grant's face. Chonan passes to side-control, but is brought back to half-guard.

Grant now has him in his guard. Chonan goes for a kneebar, but Grant spins out and takes mount. He tries for the back, but Chonan sweeps him. They're back to the guard.

Chonan tries for more ground-and-pound as the round ends.

Round three

Chonan comes forward, but eats a hard left. Chonan losses his mouthpiece and they restart. Chonan tags him with a jab and almost lands a nasty uppercut. Grant takes him to the mat. Grant tries a triangle choke, but Chonan pops his head out.

Grant tries to take his back again, but Chonan spins it into guard. Chonan tries more ground-and-pound, but can't land clean.

Grant tries to strike from half-guard, but Chonan is defending well. Chonan sweeps him and is now in Grant's guard.

Grant goes for Chonan's leg and reverses it so now he's on top. Grant tries to take his back and starts pounding him. Chonan stands up, but eats some hard punches as the round ends.

Winner: TJ Grant by split decision.

Mark Bocek vs. David Bielkheden

Round one

Bielkheden came in at 157 lbs -- missing the weight requirement by one pound.

Bocek tracks him down, but they clinch on the fence. Bielkheden tries a takedown, but can't seem to get it. They exchange knees. Bocek grabs a leg and gets Bielkheden to the mat. He passes to half-guard.

Bocek passes to side-control. Bielkheden tries to buck him off. He brings Bocek back to guard. Bocek postures up and delivers a hard right. He regains side-control and delivers some hard elbows to Bielkheden's jaw.

Bocek gets full-mount and tries to pound Bielkheden out. Bielkheden is holding on for dear life. Bocek unloads with strikes and takes his back. He sinks in a rear-naked choke and it's over!

Winner: Mark Bocek by submission at 4:57 of round one.

David (The Crow) Loiseau vs. Ed (Short Fuse) Herman

Round one

The crowd literally explodes for Loiseau.

They touch gloves and Loiseau tries a huge spinning back-kick. Herman shoots and takes him down. Loiseau tries to stand up, but Herman is all over him. Loiseau is back up, but Herman gets him down again.

Herman delivers punches to Loiseau's head. Loiseau stands up, but is taken down again. Loiseau grabs hold of his arm, but is eating punches to the head. Herman takes his back, but can't do anythign with it.

Loiseau is just holding on here. Herman starts kneeing him in the body. He delivers a few more and Loiseau stands up. The round expires and it was all Herman.

Round two

Loiseau needs to come alive.

Loiseau tries another spin-kick, but gets taken down. He seems to be trying to recreate the Charles McCarthy knockout.

Herman is in his guard. He passes to half and delivers more knees to Loiseau's body. Loiseau spins out, but Herman stays on top and has his back.

Herman is absolutely punishing Loiseau's body with knees. He starts tagging his head with punches to mix it up a little. Loiseau stands up, but is taken down again.

Loiseau's back up and they clinch on the fence. Loiseau stuffs a takedown attempt. Herman presses him against the cage again and the ref separates them.

Loiseau slips on a superman punch attempt and Herman is back on top. The round ends.

Round three

Loiseau needs something big here. He tags Herman and avoids the takedown. Herman takes him back to the cage, though. Herman keeps kneeing Loiseau's body.

Herman shoots and takes him down again. Loiseau is back up. They separate. Loiseau tries a takedown, but it's reversed and Herman is on top. Herman takes full-mount. Loiseau tries to spin out, but Herman has his back.

Loiseau is back up. He tries a sloppy body kick and Herman presses him on the fence.

Winner: Ed Herman by unanimous decision. Herman completely dominated Loiseau, taking him down at will and punishing his body with knees. Loiseau kept looking for that one big shot to finish it, but paid the price each time.

Jason (The Athlete) MacDonald vs. Nate (Rock) Quarry

Round one

Quarry tries a hard right-hook, but they clinch on the cage. MacDonald shoots, but Quarry reverses it and is in MacDonald's guard. Quarry lands a few stiff elbows.

Quarry is unloading with elbows and the ref stops it. MacDonald is bleeding heavily.

Winner: Nate Quarry by TKO at 2:27 of round one.

Denis Kang vs. Xavier (Professor X) Foupa-Pokam

Round one

Foupa-Pokam tries a quick combo and follows with a knee. He lands another to Kang's body. Hang takes him down and is in half-guard.

Kang can't seem to get his leg free. He tries for an arm-triangle, but Foupa-Pokam kicks him off. Foupa-Pokam tries a flying knee, but Kang comes back with a flurry of punches. Foupa-Pokam delivers a huge body kick -- you could hear the snap.

Kand delivers a body shot. Foupa-Pokam tries a head kick, but it's blocked. Foupa-Pokam lands a nie leg kick. Kang takes him down again and has side-control.

He lands some short elbows to Foupa-Pokam's jaw. He tries an armbar, but can't get it.

Round two

Kang misses a body shot. Foupa-Pokam tries a Thai clinch, but eats a straight-right for his trouble. Foupa-Pokam tries a push-kick, but Kang catches it and takes him down.

Kang is stuck in Foupa-Pokam's half-guard. He passes to side-control and knees the body. Kang starts working in some short-elbows and punches.

Kang tries for the arm, but can't get it. He works in more elbows. Foupa-Pokam is back up and delivers a hard knee to Kang's body. Foupa-Pokam is looking tired -- he literally put his hands on his knees. Kang tries to knock him out, but the round ends.

Round three

Kang delivers a body shot. They're both being tentative. Kang takes him down into half-guard and works for the arm. He passes to side-control.

Kang works for the kimura, but lets it go. More short elbows to the jaw of Foupa-Pokam.

Foupa-Pokam reverses and he's in Kang's guard, but Kang turns that around quickly.

Kang almosr gets full-mount, but is brought back to half-guard. He takes Foupa-Pokam's back and they stand up. The round expires.

Winner: Denis Kang by unanimous decision.
