Dawn of a new era

Gloucester's Dawn Askin has experienced both sides of a Scotties final -- the lingering disappointment of defeat and now the adrenaline rush of victory.

"I'm so frigging happy. It's so cool," Askin said after winning the Hearts as lead for Jennifer Jones' Manitoba rink .

Struggling at 3-4 early on, Askin and her teammates never gave up and reeled off eight straight wins.

"We just said we can do this," said Askin. "We can play well and bring on our A game."

Askin has come full circle after losing the 2005 Scotties final to Jones while playing for Jenn Hanna's Ottawa rink. Both finals came down to nerve-wracking final shots.

In 2005, Jones made "The Shot" -- a miraculous in-off from outside the rings.

This time, it came down to Alberta skip Shannon Kleibrink, who had to make a double-takeout to win.

"I was standing at the hogline for Alberta's final shot (Sunday) and I couldn't see the other end," recalled Askin. "I watched it on the Jumbotron. When she missed the shot I threw my broom down and ran to the other end."

When her team embraced "they told me they were really happy I finally won."

Hanna was also overjoyed.

"I am so happy for Dawn and so proud of her achievements. The girl played awesome all week, which wasn't a surprise to me, and I know she'll represent her hometown well at the world championships. (in Vernon, B.C., in March)."
