Scott in Scott final

LONDON -- It is somewhat coincidental that a curler with the last name Scott has a chance to win the Scott Tournament of Hearts in the last year with its title sponsor.

B.C.'s Kelly Scott heads into today's national women's tournament, which will be re-branded next year because Scott Paper has been bought out, with a lot on the line at the Labatt Centre.

Scott placed second last December in the Olympic trials to Calgary's Shannon Kleibrink, who went on to win a bronze medal in Turin.

THE BEST

Scott now faces the defending Tournament of Hearts champion, Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, in the championship game.

"If you want to be the best you have to beat the best," Scott said. "Right now, they are the best. It's going to be a challenge for us."

Jones, who lost to Scott in the round-robin, advanced to the final by beating six-time national champion and two-time world champion Colleen Jones of Nova Scotia, 10-4. Jennifer Jones sealed the victory with a double takeout in the eighth end to score four.

"I thought we were even sharper (yesterday) than we were on (Friday at the start of the playoffs)," she said.

The two teams traded numerous misses in the first five ends, which was tied 3-3, but after Colleen Jones rolled out of the house on a hit and stick to the full eight-foot with her last shot in the sixth, the defending champion drew for three.

"I was just rubbing on every guard and I knew that would turn around and we'd get it going our way," Jennifer Jones said.

"It was a great team game."

If Jennifer Jones and her team have an advantage over their opponents, it is that they've been in this situation before.

"We know what to expect," she said. "We know how to feel and we've just got to go out there and enjoy it and I think we're ready for that."

Conversely, Scott's team clearly is on the rise, qualifying for the playoffs in the tournament last year on its first try and then finishing second in the trials.

"They're a great team, they've had a great week, lead to skip is solid and I expect it to be a really good game," Jones said.
