This is not your grandfather’s Brier.

More your grandfather-is-rolling-in-his-grave Brier.

For sure it’s the first ever ‘relegation’ Brier. And also the first-ever ‘winner returns next year as team Canada’ Brier.

Relegation is a foreign concept in Canadian sport and the Brier is the ultimate celebration of Canadiana in sport.

Are you ready for a Calgary 1015 Brier with no Saskatchewan in it?

It’s possible.

More likely it’ll be a Brier next year in Calgary with no Nova Scotia or no Prince Edward Island.

It was decided in the fall that the two teams with the fewest wins over the last three years will be relegated. Nova Scotia, P.E.I and B.C. all have 5-17 records over the previous two years. Saskatchewan is in danger as well at 8-14.

If it is indeed Nova Scotia (Jamie Murphy) and P.E.I. (Eddie “Spuds” MacKendzie) relegated, as most would expect, what happens?

The winners of their provincial playdowns next year would fly into Calgar
