Kevin Martin was the kind of guy who marched to his own drummer.

So, when he announced his retirement as a competitive curler late Friday afternoon, it was done in typical enigmatic fashion.

There it was in a Sportsnet news release announcing Martin would be a broadcast analyst and official spokesman for the Grand Slam of Curling.

Fitting, since Martin turned the curling world on its head a little over a decade ago when he became the front man for the fledgling venture.

Cashspiels had been around forever, but the Grand Slam concept took the game in a different direction.

Martin turned the curling establishment on its head when he led a player boycott against the Brier in a controversial move designed to show the sporting world the game had much more to offer.

In his own way, he became a builder. Whether or not that translates into a Curling Hall of Fame nomination remains to be seen.
