Alberta's Olympic gold medallist Kevin Martin drew to the pin to nip Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton 6-5 at the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials before 6,784 fans at the MTS Centre on Monday afternoon.

Martin, the defending trials champ, moved into a first-place tie with B.C.'s John Morris and Northern Ontario's Brad Jacobs at 2-0.

Jacobs clipped Manitoba's Mike McEwen 7-5 and Morris edged Alberta's Kevin Koe 6-4.

Both Stoughton and McEwen drop to 0-2 along with Koe.

Ontario's former world champion Glenn Howard also spanked provincial mate John Epping 9-5. Both are now 1-1.
