WINNIPEG - With top spot on the line, it was the veteran who got the yips, not the neophyte.

Manitoba's four-time Canadian champion Jennifer Jones blew shots with the hammer three time, allowing Alberta's relatively-unknown Val Sweeting to steal a total of seven points to pull out a 9-6 triumph in a first-place showdown of the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials before 5,820 fans at the MTS Centre on Monday night.

The killing blow came when Jones attempted a bump-back facing four in the seventh end and sailed through the house like a rookie pitcher throwing four straight balls.

"I just missed a couple of bad shots and lost control of the game and that's gonna happen," Jones said. "We let one slip away tonight and we'll come back sharper tomorrow."

The surprising Sweeting is now alone in first place at 3-0 while Jones drops into a two-way tie for second spot with fellow Manitoban Chelsea Carey at 2-1.
