OTTAWA - Shorty Jenkins was a curling legend.

Curlers, curling fans, ice-makers -- all expressed sadness about his death last Thursday at the age of 77. His illness robbed us of his presence at many events, sooner than anyone wished. His self-taught skill about ice-making and rocks changed our game for the better forever.

But the best thing about Shorty was his honesty and his willingness to share his knowledge.

He also possessed an openness to learn. The goal was to provide the best surface possible.

He requested not to have a service following his death. There was no event for everyone to gather to swap stories about the King of Swing. That may happen.

As a tribute to Shorty, Grand Slam ice-maker Mark Shurek has placed the Short Man's trademark pink Stetson on the ice for the Player's Championship this week in Toronto.
