CALGARY - The Calgary-based foursome of Steve Petryk, Dan Petryk, Dean Joanisse and Roland Robinson prevailed in the 24-rink, $22,000 Original 16 World Curling Tour championship at the Calgary Curling Club.

"It was a great weekend," Steve Petryk said following the local team's win over Edmonton's Robert Schlender in the championship final, a game that saw Petryk score three points in the sixth end to break a 3-3 tie en route a 6-3 final-game victory and the tournament title.

"It was one of those weekends where everything really went well for us," Petryk said.

"We've qualified at four or five events this season, so as a team, we've had a lot of confidence. Everything came together for us this time. It was a good feeling."

The Petryk rink took a bit of a longer road to Sunday's championship, however, as the veteran rink had to first meet Airdrie's Bert Martin in a Saturday night tiebreaker.

In the tiebreaker, Petryk prevailed 5-3 to earn a spot in Sunday's eight-rink playoff.

From there, the winning rink that features brothers Steve and Dan never looked back, winning over Edmonton's Rick McKague 6-4 in Sunday morning's quarterfinals before earning a hard-fought 5-4 win against Sean O'Connor of Calgary in the semifinals.

Schlender advanced to the final thanks to his 7-4 quarterfinal win over Calgary's Charley Thomas and a decisive 8-0 win over Yellowknife's Jamie Koe in the semifinals.

Schlender used deuces in the opening end and another in the fifth to defeat Thomas, the local skip who had advanced to Sunday's playoff round after putting together a perfect 5-0 record in the weekend's roundrobin play.

Next up for Petryk and Co. is next weekend's $100,000 Masters of Curling in Brantford, Ont., a WCT grand-slam stop on the men's circuit.

Petryk and Kevin Koe are the two Calgary rinks who'll compete in the star-studded 32-rink Masters in Brantford, beginning Thursday.
