OTTAWA - The Brier was bittersweet for Ottawa's Craig Savill.

Glenn Howard's lead is ecstatic the Ontario rink won the whole shebang, but bummed out that he couldn't enjoy the festive part of the week because he was so ill.

It was great, Savill said, that “after the last three years we were finally glad to get the Alberta monkey off our back.” by beating Westerners in the final.

But Savill’s illness forced him to miss the social side of the Brier.

“I didn’t get to have fun at the Brier,” said Savill. “I was so sick, it was the first time I didn’t want to curl at the Brier. I didn’t want to even be there.”

Savill said the ice conditions were a factor in Ontario’s struggles in the first few draws.

“The ice was a little bit tricky. It kept changing,” he said. “So we were trying to get used to the ice and we weren’t playing all that well. And we were getting frustrated with each other.

“By the fifth or sixth game, we started talking and had a meeting and said we were all kind of struggling, so let’s talk a bit more about the ice and rocks.

“We got some more communication going and once we did that, we started getting on a roll.”

He credits third Wayne Middaugh with helping them through.

“He can pick up the ice real good.”

CITY CHANGES

City of Ottawa bonspiel begins Wednesday and there will be a big reward for some. The ’spiel’s winner gets a cheque for $6,000, with lesser cash payouts ranging from $3,000 to $800. Even Gardner’s second, Brad Kidd, is here from Peterborough with his own team. The open and senator sections are filled, while the seniors is short by eight rinks. There are seven U.S. squads, as well as rinks from many parts of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Alberta. The open section final is at the Ottawa Hunt at 5 p.m. Sunday. The senior and senators finals are at the Ottawa curling club Saturday at 6 p.m.
