OTTAWA - Bev Mason-Leroux has a big (Crystal) Heart.

Mason-Leroux skipped her Navy team to its second Crystal Heart Curling Classic championship on Sunday.

She and her rink of Maureen Harris, Dawn Butler and Erin Butler defeated the RCMP's Kathy Van Egmond in an battle of the undefeated rinks. The Navy women controlled the entire match until they shook hands in the seventh end.

Mason-Leroux and her squad (minus the bantam-aged lead Erin Butler — Dawn’s daughter) also took the bonspiel in 2003. She was low-key after Sunday’s win, preferring to concentrate on the good time the team had.

“We do it just to have fun,” she said with a grin. “We are a really fun team. We’re light-hearted. We don’t take it too seriously. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We just have a good time and it works.”

This attitude sits well with the skip, who lives in pain.

“I’m at stage four cancer and have been for four years. It’s something you deal with on a daily basis. It shows you that anybody can do anything they want.”

Mason-Leroux spoke enthusiastically about the money the bonspiel raises every year for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

“We raised $52,000 this year. Isn’t that amazing?”

Mason-Leroux’s lead is skipping her own team in the bantam provincials that begin Wednesday.

When asked if Erin ever asks for advice, her skip laughs.

“I ask her sometimes for advice. Sometimes she will look at me a little funny and think ‘why is she doing that?’ ”

Erin is 16 and the other three teammates range in age from mid-50s to late 40s.

The winner of the Crystal Heart senior section was Eunice MacLeod, who defeated Lois Graham from Navy. Other Open section winners were: Second event Maelane Hums; Third event: Brenda Muir; Fourth event: Sue Sully; Consolation event: Susan Nichol.
