WINNIPEG - Mikey's still makin’ money.
Manitoba's Mike McEwen may have failed to win another cashspiel on the weekend but he did bump his lead atop the World Curling Tour money list.
McEwen, who has already played in four finals this season, earned $6,500 when he lost a semifinal at a WCT spiel in Brantford, Ont., to increase his lead to $79,500. Now, his foursome will prepare to play in next week’s Canada Cup, where both a men’s and women’s berth into the 2013 Canadian Curling Trials in Winnipeg will be up for grabs.
Joining McEwen at the Canada Cup in Cranbrook, B.C., will be Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton, who pocketed $2,500 when he lost a semifinal at a World/Manitoba Curling Tour stop in Stonewall.
William Lyburn of Deer Lodge won that Stonewall spiel when he defeated Chris Galbraith 6-2 in the final to earn $5,000.
Barb Spencer also won $5,000 when she beat Fort Rouge clubmate Joelle Brown 4-3 in the women’s final there.
Meanwhile, Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones settled for $6,500 when she also lost a semifinal in Brantford, which increased her overall earnings to about $24,000 (third).
Both Jones and Morden’s Chelsea Carey — who will tune up at the Dekalb SuperSpiel in Morris this weekend — will also compete at the Canada Cup.
