WINNIPEG - The curling season may be over but some teams can already start taking aim at 2014 Olympics.
Reigning world champion Jeff Stoughton is among four Manitoba teams that have already qualified for the 2011 Canada Cup Nov. 30-Dec. 4 in Cranbrook, B.C., where the first two berths into the 2013 Canadian Curling Trials (to be held in Winnipeg) will be determined.
Joining Stoughton among the seven men's teams at the Canada Cup will be Mike McEwen. On the women’s side, both Jennifer Jones and Chelsea Carey have qualified.
A total of 14 teams have been sent invitations to the Canada Cup and must accept by May 9, CCA director of championship services Danny Lamoureux said Monday.
Teams must maintain at least three members from the from the foursomes that had qualified, which means that Ontario's Glenn Howard will still qualify despite replacing third Richard Hart with Wayne Middaugh.
Stoughton, McEwen, Jones and Carey are also guaranteed berths into the 2013 pre-Olympic trials event should any of them still need a spot by then.
