Winnipeg has been awarded the 2013 Tim Hortons Canadian Curling Trials, the CCA announced during the Brier in London, Ont., on Wednesday.
"I'm stoked, I'm excited," said Curl Manitoba executive director Shane Ray, the man behind the successful bid. "It's a great opportunity for curling in Manitoba."
The trials will be held at the MTS Centre, Dec. 1-8. The winners will represent Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Eight men's and eight women's teams will compete at the trials for that right to represent their country at the Olympics.
“We believe that Winnipeg will do an outstanding job of hosting this event and act as the final selection of our athletes who will represent Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi," CCA CEO Greg Stremlaw said in a release.
It is believed that Winnipeg won out over strong bids from both Ottawa and Saskatoon because it put up an unprecedented $1 million to obtain it.
"Now, we have to start writing cheques," Ray said.
