Pal Trulsen has been around these events for a long time.
With three Continental Cup wins and an Olympic gold medal on his resume, Trulsen has enough experience to not be nervous about his team’s prospects.
In fact, he’d like to see the format tweaked a bit so it can be more spectator-friendly.
This time around, as team captain for the World team, Truslen gets to make the calls on the matchups.
“That’s not difficult at all,” said Trulsen. “The teams have to meet and we have to do it. North America has a plan, too. It will be what it will be.
“I’ve asked the teams who they want to meet and they say it really doesn’t matter.”
What Trulsen would like to avoid in future competitions is having the same team face each other three times.
“Playing Martin three times, or Koe, in a weekend is too much,” Trulsen said about Edmonton’s Kevins — the Olympic gold medal winner and the world champion.
“Maybe we can put that in the rules, that you can only play the same team once.”
“It’s for the people, for the fans and for TV. They don’t want to see Thomas Ulsrud against Kevin Martin three times. I think that’s good for the players, too.”
So, when the matchups were announced Wednesday afternoon, Trulsen won the day and mixed up the matchups.
With the series tied 3-3, Team World has a chance to take the series lead for the first time.
“That’s what we’re aiming for … to have a good time and to win, too,” said Trulsen. “Team World has never been in front, so (if the World wins), this would be the first time.”
If nothing else, Trulsen has a Worlds of experience more than Team North American captain Neil Harrison.
“Pal’s been involved before,” said Harrison. “He’s talked before about it not being good to play the same team three times. I’m not sure what the right number would be. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. That’s why he’s the skip. He’s the ideas guy.”
Olympic gold medallist Kevin Martin likes Truslen’s idea.
“It makes perfect sense to me,” said Martin. “If it’s better for the crowd, that’s good to me. If you want Edin to play Koe on Sunday, then he could play Ulsrud and Murdoch some other time. You can still have your main matchup at the end.”
