Undefeated rink ousts top seed
By QMI Agency

Pembina’s Daniel Birchard punched his ticket to the final of the Manitoba junior men’s curling championship on Sunday night in Gimli.

Birchard, who is undefeated in the event, dumped top seed and 2009 provincial champ Sam Good of Stonewall 6-3 in the 1-1 Page playoff game.

That propelled Birchard directly to the final, while Good, who was also 7-0 in the round robin, dropped down to meet Deer Lodge’s Joey Witherspoon in Monday morning’s semifinal.

Witherspoon eliminated West Kildonan’s Kyle Doering with a 9-5 triumph in Sunday’s night 2-2 game.

Good took a 2-1 lead in the fourth end, but Birchard bounced back with two in the fifth and then stole one in the sixth to take the lead for good. He finished off Good with a steal of one in the ninth.

Witherspoon, who played third for last year’s provincial champ, Alex Forrest, notched deuces in the second and fourth ends and then stole another pair in the ninth to seal the victory.

Birchard capped his perfect round-robin run with an 8-4 victory over Petersfield’s Tanner Lott on Sunday morning. Good edged Doering 7-6 in an extra end in a battle of unbeatens to wrap up round-robin play on Sunday afternoon.

The semifinal will be played at 9:30 a.m. on Monday. The final will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Do you think Chad Johnson can still play at a high level in the NFL?
Yes, he is a talented receiver
No, he is too old to play
