For eons, it has been known as the women's Last Chance Bonspiel.

This year, it has become the First-Chance Spiel.

Fort Rouge's Kerri Flett clobbered Morden's Chelsea Carey 9-1 in the final of the annual Curl Manitoba Women's Bonspiel at the Wildewood Curling Club last night.

Flett's is the first team to earn a berth into the 2011 Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts, to be held in Altona next January.

"It feels awesome to get that out of the way and not have to worry about winning our spot all year," said Flett, who failed to qualify for the 2010 Scotties held earlier this month in Killarney despite a great season on the cashspiel circuit.

'ALL THE BETTER'

"We did really well all year and felt we should have been there, which really hurt, and makes this all the better," said Flett, supported by third Janice Blair, second Susan Baleja and lead Alison Harvey.

"Now, we just have to worry about making money next year."

Next, Flett will likely attempt to defend the Manitoba Mixed title she won with Dave Boehmer last year.

JUNIORS: Manitoba's Alex Forrest nipped defending Canadian champion Brett Gallant of P.E.I. 8-7 in an extra end to improve to 3-0 at the Canadian Junior Men's and Women's Championship in Sorel-Tracy, Que. Forrest also defeated NWT 8-2 yesterday.

However, P.E.I.'s Sarah Fullerton felled Manitoba's Breanne Meakin 11-4 on the women's side.

Meakin, who, had blasted NWT 19-4 earlier, dropped to 2-1.

RURAL WINNERS: The Safeway Championship rural zone winners to date: Swan River's Bret Scales, Hamiota's Terry McNamee, La Salle's Randy Neufeld, Brandon Allan Lyburn, Flin Flon's Murray Woodward, Thompson's Travis Graham and Portage la Prairie's Ryan Hyde.

BITER: The official number of entries into the MCA's annual men's bonspiel is 405 teams -- with a waiting list -- according to Curl Manitoba.
