Hell no, he won't go.

"Dan Holowaychuk will be with us until the very end. If the end is going to be the Olympics and he's not allowed to be with us, then Randy Ferbey is not going to the Olympics either," the Edmonton skip told Sun Media.

Controversy over the fifth man was built in for the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Olympic curling trials. But it has come out already.

The Canadian Curling Association has stated it intends to have a say in the selection of the fifth man/woman that the winning teams will take to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

"Holowaychuk has been our fifth man for years and he's done more for us as our fifth man than most people know. We took a long hard took at who we wanted as a fifth man/manager long before the trend started. The CCA is at square one with the fifth man. We're already at square two," said Ferbey.

Jeff Stoughton picked Randy Dutiaume as the alternate for last year's Brier final in Calgary and for The Roar. And Stoughton said he'd be determined to keep the man who was a fan favourite representing Manitoba as a skip at the 2005 Brier in Edmonton.

Holowaychuk isn't likely the level of curler with the extent of elite level experience the CCA would have in mind and Dutiaume doesn't likely have the positional versatility. The CCA sees European teams rotating the fifth man into the line-up as an actual member of the team and playing a fair share while Canadian teams still carry guys more as a spare tire and sometimes with a spare tire.

The whole fifth man concept is an interesting study in several different directions.

Remember, Russ Howard was added by Brad Gushue to throw second rocks and skip in the trials and won a gold medal. That changed everything.

Would Mike Harris have won gold in Nagano if he'd picked up the best possible player available to replace him if he got sick, as he did for the final, instead of Paul Savage?

In addition to skips, and maybe moreso than non-sweeping skips, the CCA would certainly see thirds like John Morris, Dave Nedohin, Jon Mead and Richard Hart, and seconds like Scott Pfeifer and Marc Kennedy as major upgrades. With those sort of options would Glenn Howard want to add brother Russ, who is now 54? Would the woman's winner add a female Russ Howard?

"That's funny," said Shannon Kleibrink. "My team was laughing when I told them about your question. They say I am the Russ Howard of women's curling. I can't sweep, so there is a pretty good chance that I won't be giving up my position in the house.

"We have added Heather Nedohin from Edmonton as our fifth and we are so lucky to have her on the team. She is extremely versatile and can play virtually any position ... something that's pretty rare in curling."

The women's field has vet skip Sherry Anderson hooked up with Crystal Webster.

It's already a trivia question to name the fifth man who owns a silver medal carrying brooms for Martin at the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Answer: Ken Tralnberg of Edmonton.

Martin says he's not guaranteeing Adam Enright, his fifth man for last year's Brier win and these Olympic trials, anything past next weekend should he win this.

"I'd want the next best guy available who we think would be compatible chemistry-wise. Definitely the best guy is who should be picked."

Martin said he'd be open to discussions with the CCA about picking that guy.

He even goes further. He thinks for the Olympics there should be two people selected as extra members of the team for all countries.

"I think there should be a front end guy and a back end guy," he said of an extra player who could sub at lead or second and another who could replace the third or the skip.
