McEwen granted exemption

Mike McEwen is in after all.

The Assiniboine Memorial skip took exception to Curl Manitoba's ruling that his foursome would not get the exemption into this year's men's provincial championship as Manitoba’s top team on the CTRS as related in yesterday’s Winnipeg Sun. McEwen won his protest and will indeed be granted that exemption, Curl Manitoba executive director Shane Ray confirmed last night.

Because of a mix-up in the way the rules were incorrectly re-written into Curl Manitoba's book, Ray had ruled that McEwen would not get the exemption because Charleswood's Jeff Stoughton had more points but already had the exemption as the returning champ.

"We were initially denied the berth, but once we pointed out the discrepancy in the media release of 2005 versus the MCA rules, and because precedence has been set over the last two years, we were awarded the CTRS berth for the 2010 Safeway Championship," McEwen wrote in an email to The Sun yesterday.

Meanwhile, Stoughton has officially declared that he will take his exemption with all four returning members, including third Kevin Park, who joined him from Alberta. Ray intends to discuss Curl Manitoba's stricter residency rules with Stoughton before actually challenging Park's eligibility.
