The province's top men's and women's curling teams will hit the ice next week as the Manitoba Curling Tour continues its 19th season with the McMillan Insurance Classic, Oct. 1-5 in Selkirk.
Cash purses totalling $469,625 will be up for grabs in 17 events, including two cashspiels after the MCT Championships, which will act as the starting events for the 20th season in 2010-11.
The season wraps up with the MCT Championships at the Wheat City Curling Club, Dec. 18-20 in Brandon, marking the first time the championships are being held in the Wheat City. The men's champion, or highest eligible team in the men's division, will earn a provincial berth in the 2010 Safeway Championship in Steinbach in February.
The tour welcomes back the Courtesy Freight Northern Ontario Superspiel in Thunder Bay, Nov. 13-16, with continuing events in Selkirk, Thistle (two), Brandon, Charleswood, Beausejour, Carberry, Fort Rouge (two), Portage, Rossmere, Swan River, Gimli, Stonewall, Dauphin and Morris. The winners of the Coors Light Christmas Open, Dec. 26-30 at Fort Rouge and the second annual DEKALB SuperSpiel, March 11-15 in Morris, will qualify for the 2010-11 MCT Championships.
As in past years, the largest purses on the MCT will be offered on the same weekend, Oct. 23-26, with the $60,000 Manitoba Lotteries Women's Classic at Fort Rouge and the $58,000 Meyers Norris Penny Prairie Classic for men in Portage.
