Wainwright is all right by Park

Shane Park likes Wainwright.

Really likes Wainwright.

It seems like every time he's played a spiel in the town a little over two hours' drive south-east of Edmonton, he's always been in the money.

Just happens that the 2009 men's provincials are at Wainwright and if he somehow manages to qualify for the event at this weekend's men's northerns, karma could take over.

"I don't want to be sitting in the stands, put it that way," said Park, who had two wins out of the gate.

It was two months ago yesterday that Park won the Roaming Buffalo Classic. He finished runner-up in 2007.

"Wainwright's actually always been pretty good to me," said Park. "I think I've lost the final once or twice before that and always made the semifinals, so there's a reason to like that town."

Park is looking for his second straight provincials appearance, if for no other reason than to go one step better in 2008.

It was a pretty emotional moment for Park when he skipped his first rink into a men's provincial.

"Absolutely," said Park, who lost the 2008 provincial C final to James Pahl. "I'd been playing this game for 30 years.

"I'd like to repeat and have a better performance. We played good enough last year. I missed my last shot and I think that last rock is still going.

"Naw, it wasn't that bad. I only missed it by two inches."

With the big three of Kevin Martin, Kevin Koe and Randy Ferbey already saddled up with a provincial spot, this year's northerns became more wide-open. Koe had to qualify out of the northers in 2008 and Ferbey in 2007.

"The three guns in makes it tough right there and we've go three teams here that could probably do pretty decent," said Park. "Those guys not being here does open it up for more teams to get there, which is a good thing. I think it's good for the fans and I think it's great for everybody.

"You get a lot more incentive for other guys to play. Who knows? Once you get into provincials, you might get hot."

You can tell Park at least has the desire to be one of the teams that makes it through.
