Is there a pattern developing?

Hard on the heels of Ottawa-area rinks winning both sides of the Ontario juniors, local rinks captured both senior provincial titles in Scarborough Sunday.

The Rideau Curling Club's Cheryl McBain, with Joyce Potter, Janelle Sadler and Diana Favel, ended the round-robin on top with a 6-1 record and earned a bye to the final.

On the men's side, Bruce Delaney's Navy rink, with Rick Bachand, Duncan Jamieson and George Mitchell, finished tied for first with Ottawa's Layne Noble.

Since Delaney earlier beat Noble, the latter walked the plank to the semi-final, where he lost 6-5 in an extra end to Chatham's Kirk Ziola.

The women's final also went to a dramatic extra end, with McBain winning 7-6 over four-time senior provincial champ Anne Dunn of Galt.

Down one in the 10th, McBain elected to throw a soft hit, rather than draw, because of fudging ice. The hit-and-stick worked to tie the game.

In the extra end, McBain threw an out-turn draw to the back four-foot that buried when the ice fudged. Dunn threw a last-rock, double takeout that caused the McBain shot rock to jam and score by a half-inch.

"Anne had a difficult shot to make. If it was a (Kevin) Martin or (Wayne) Middaugh throwing, it might have worked." said McBain.

Ziola's last gasp began in the fourth end when Delaney took three. The Ottawa rink stole five points over the next three ends, leading the handshakes in the seventh. The 10-1 rout gave Delaney his third provincial senior title.

Both Ottawa squads advance to nationals on Prince Edward Island in March.

On the junior side, Rachel Homan and Bowie Abbis-Mills (Carleton Place) will represent the province in Salmon Arm, B.C., later this month.
