Two Manitoba curling clubs have offered to host the inaugural Dominion Curling Club provincial championship, a non-CCA sanctioned event, next November.

The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company will cover all costs of hosting the event designed to fill the gap between the club and competitive curler.

The Winnipeg Curling Clubs Association, which hosts a clubs champions championship at the end of each year, has offered to partner up with Dominion.

A total of 26 Manitoba curling clubs have declared interest in participating.

TV COVERAGE ASSURED

MCA executive director Shane Ray assured that this year's Safeway Championship will be televised, although he could not say whether Global TV will be back to provide its comprehensive coverage. There has been concern the past few years that economics would force Global to pull out.

The situation will be clarified next week.

FUNDING

The MCA Development Fund will distribute a total of $50,000 to 16 different Manitoba curling clubs to upgrade their facilities.

HOUSECLEANING

Hamiota's Brent Strachan beat Brandon's Jim Renwick 7-4 in the final of a senior men's berth bonspiel in Killarney late Monday to earn a trip to the provincial playdowns.

COMING UP

Aside from the women's zones and the Grand Slam event in Quebec City, a Manitoba Curling Tour event will be held in Morris.

Although three Slam playoff games will be televised on the weekend, the Saturday night match will only be seen on bold, CBC's digital affiliate. The other games will be broadcast by the regular CBC outlet.

GRASSROOTS BOOST

The MCA will benefit from the Valour Road Curling Club Legacy Fund. The Valour Road, which has essentially been absorbed by the Thistle Curling Club, gave the MCA a $15,000 cheque to be used to support grassroots youth curling and, starting this year, will go toward those aged 14 and under who will compete in the Junior Christmas Bonspiel and the Asham 8-Ender competition.
