Six to fight for five berths

Only one of the six teams still in the hunt for Safeway Championship berths will go home unhappy today when the MCA Bonspiel wraps up.

There's a good chance Arnold Asham's Wildewood foursome, the only one still unbeaten, will not be that team.

Asham rattled off his 13th straight win of the MCA last night, downing Morden's Brad Wainikka 6-3 in main event quarter-final action.

Asham, the grand aggregate front-runner, has to win only one of his two semifinals today to clinch one of the five berths at next month's provincial men's curling championship in Brandon.

Ste. Anne's Murray Woodward, Brandon's Willie Lyburn, Assiniboine Memorial's David Bohn, the Granite's Bob Sigurdson and the Heather's Ken Ringaert are the other teams looking for berths today. Brandon's Allan Lyburn, who has a Safeway berth, is the other team still in a main event.

The Thistle's Randy Dutiaume and Doug Riach, along with West Kildonan's Dean Nero, all lost back-to-back games yesterday and were eliminated from provincial contention.

The two main event finals will be played tonight at 7:45 at Deer Lodge and Fort Garry. If Asham makes it to both, one will be moved up to 4 p.m.
