Pressure? What pressure?

The list of undefeated teams at the MCA Bonspiel was down to 20 last night, and eight of those were notable names still searching for Safeway Championship berths.

Wildewood's Arnold Asham and the Thistle's Doug Riach were guaranteed to wake up this morning without a blemish so far.

Asham downed Springfield's Garth Light 9-6 and Riach blanked Pembina's Victor Bellay 7-0 in the 6 p.m. draw, and both improved to 6-0.

Meanwhile, Assiniboine-Memorial's David Bohn, the Granite's Bob Sigurdson, Stonewall's Sean Grassie, the Thistle's Randy Dutiaume, Ste. Anne's Murray Woodward and Brandon's Willie Lyburn were all 5-0 going into last night's late draw.

If any of those teams fell last night, they will still have a chance to qualify for next month's provincial men's curling championship in Brandon through the other main event.

The other teams waking up with 6-0 records this morning are Pembina's Neil Okumura, Deer Lodge's James Kirkness, Fort Rouge's Jay DeFoort, West Kildonan's Dean Nero, St. Vital's Corey Chambers and North Dakota's Craig Disher.

SPEED BUMP: East St. Paul's Dave Boehmer was cruising right along with a perfect record until running into red-hot Mike McEwen of Assiniboine-Memorial yesterday morning.

Boehmer allowed a five-ender in an 8-4 loss to McEwen, but he rebounded in his other main event with a 6-2 win over West Kildonan's Glenn McLachlan yesterday afternoon.

CHAMP BIDS ADIEU: Defending grand aggregate champ Brad Haight has been eliminated from Safeway Championship contention.

His Victoria rink lost its opener on Thursday and then fell 5-0 to St. Vital's Dean Steski in Friday's late draw to bow out of both main events.

COMING UP: The big game in today's 9 a.m. main-event draw will be a battle of undefeated squads when James Kirkness meets Corey Chambers at the Thistle ... David Bohn, still searching for a provincial berth, meets Brandon's Allan Lyburn, who has a spot, at noon today in another main-event match. That clash also takes place at the Thistle.
