An old, familiar face from the far north will be heading back to the men's provincial curling playdowns.

Thompson's Rae Hainstock nipped La Salle's Randy Neufeld in an extra end in the final of the Safeway Championship Northern Berth Bonspiel in Flin Flon yesterday.

"It feels wonderful to be going back again," said Hainstock, who is making his seventh trip to the men's provincials. "And this is the first floater (floating berth spiel) I've won."

Supported by third Gerry Haight, second Alex Sutherland and Claude Hykawy, Hainstock will travel to Brandon for the Safeway Championship, Feb. 13-17.

'THE BIG THING'

"We're pretty realistic about our chances," said Hainstock, 58. "We can win some of our games but we're not as good as some of them."

Hainstock's team also got $1,560.

"The money is academic," Hainstock said.

"Getting to go to the provincials is the big thing, That's always exciting."

Hainstock had advanced to the final by clipping Carman's Kelly Marnoch 6-5 while Neufeld had defeated Rich Muntain of The Pas 13-9 in the semifinals.

Hainstock will join Charleswood's defending champion Jeff Stoughton, Assiniboine Memorial's Kerry Byrtnyk (top CTRS point-getter) and Lorne Hamblin of Morris (southern berth spiel winner) in the Wheat City.
