A front ender did it again.

Mike Stachon, who normally plays on the competitive circuit as lead for Jeff McCrady, skipped a Metcalfe team to an 8-4, seven-end victory over Richmond's Rob Fraser to win the Grand Aggregate prize in the City of Ottawa bonspiel.

Stachon followed in the footsteps of fellow McCrady front-ender Jeff Norman, who topped the OVCA Mixed 'spiel in January.

So what's a cash player doing in this competition? "I always play in it. It's a really good event for club curlers to have a couple of beers and play at different clubs."

He feels the 'City' "gets club curlers out into an area where they can compete and see the light. The guys I was with went to the finals and they loved it."

Stachon played with Brad Dow, a teammate from his junior days and with Jeff Cumming and Stewart MacLeod -- 10 games in five days with only one loss.

Merv Paine took the Senior title, while Vic Hosson captured the Senators section. Other event winners, in order of events, were: Bruce Delaney, Brad Dow, Dave Fanset, Thomas Dufour (Team France), Ted Butler, Richard Nimijean, Barry Mersereau, Al Scott, Rob Robertson, Jack Dill, Bill Adair, Jim Levie, Layne Noble, Luc Landriault, Bruce Knox, Cliff Reddick, Wally Morris, Serge Denis, Bill Rogers, Arnie Powell, Merv Paine, Nelson Sans-Cartier, Ed Langer and Bob McAskin.

OCA RESULTS: J.P. Lachance's rink went 6-1 to capture the banner at the Best Western Ontario Intermediates. Lachance's team mates were Frank O'Driscoll, Gord Schade, and Barry Conrad.

NEWS AND NOTES: With an assist from new lead Dawn Askin of Ottawa, Jennifer Jones won the Canada Cup on Sunday. Assuming Askin remains with that revolving door team until 2009, she'll at least have a spot in the pre-Olympic Trials bonspiel that will send four teams to the Trials ... Look for a bid for a post- 2010 Brier here in Ottawa...Why not a men's worlds?

LITTLE ROCKERS: Their championship is Sunday in Kemptville. Joining the field are Zone 3 reps Alex Cormier and Karen Holstead.

SUOMI: Olympic silver medallist Markku Uusipaavalniemi adds Finland MP to his name. He secured 2,800 votes in his country's national election on Sunday to now sit in Parliament for the ruling Central Party. Might his desk nameplate spill over to another desk?

CURLING THIS WEEK: The Tim Hortons Colts and Trophy provincials begin today, with Jason Curtis, Keil Gallinger, Tracy Samaan and Toni Rutland carrying this region's colours ... The first men's over- 70 Grand Masters provincial championship takes place this weekend in Thornhill ... Early risers or those late to bed can catch the semi-finals of the women's worlds Saturday at 7 a.m. and the finals Sunday at 1 a.m. Both are on CBC.
